ON THE BACK of better news flow, the Straits Times Index firmed up to end last week 37.1 points or 1.3% higher. The Euro woes aren’t over yet and will continue to dampen sentiment, as they did today with markets dipping slightly. But bull markets are meant to climb a wall of worry, says Andrew Beal, director of Pacific equities at Henderson Global Investors. And while some economic indicators point to slowing growth, this should be expected given the strong recovery last year, he adds.

FIND A MOBILE-phone market where penetration rates are low but growing quickly. Buy a major stake in one of the players in that market and ensure that it has all the funding it needs to grow its market share. Watch its revenue and earnings take off. Rinse. Repeat. From Indonesia to India, Singapore Telecommunications has built a formidable portfolio of overseas telecoms assets across the region. But, its formula of getting into frontier markets early doesn’t appear to be working as well as it once did. And, analysts are watching with growing unease as problems emerge at more and more of the telecom juggernaut’s overseas investments.

WHAT STARTED AS just a sneeze in Greece seems to have cast a chill over equity markets across the globe. Investors cheered last Monday the thought that Greece’s problems were now behind them, but Tuesday brought a rude shock and things accelerated quickly into a freefall. The Straits Times Index ended last week down 5.2%, its weakest weekly performance in nearly three months. Dealers say market sentiment is now extremely fragile as brokerages rushed to downgrade their equity views over the course of last week, advocating a flight to quality.
